The Championship Series portion of the Road to the Kentucky Derby got off to a dramatic start in Saturday's Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park, where 4-5 favorite Upstart was disqualified for impeding Itsaknockout.
Upstart, who had dominated the January 24 Holy Bull (G2) over this same track and 1 1/16-mile trip, was much more workmanlike this time as he ground his way past Frosted in the stretch.
In the process, a laboring Frosted bumped Upstart, who subsequently veered over into the path of the rallying Itsaknockout. That forced jockey Luis Saez to steady, and Itsaknockout lost momentum that he never regained.
Upstart crossed the wire 2 3/4 lengths clear in a final time of 1:46 1/5, but the stewards posted the inquiry sign. Saez also lodged a claim of foul, and after review, the stewards demoted Upstart from first to second.
Itsaknockout was awarded the victory, along with the 50 Kentucky Derby points that propelled him to second on the leaderboard. The Todd Pletcher trainee also retained his perfect three-for-three record.
Upstart added 20 points, bringing his total up to 36.
Frammento closed late to grab third, good for 10 Derby points. Frosted tired to fourth, earned five more points, and now has 13.
