The lightly-raced Materiality (Afleet Alex) replicated the feat of stablemate Constitution (A.P. Indy) by taking the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday in just his third career start.
The 9-5 second choice in a field of nine, Materiality prompted an early pace set by Jack Tripp (Flatter), who got the first quarter in :23 4/5. Materiality soon edged clear of that longshot down the backside, recording fractions of :48 1/5 and 1:12 2, but was hounded by even-money favorite Upstart until deep stretch when Materiality pulled away to a 1 1/2-length victory under John Velazquez.
Materiality paid $5.60 after completing 1 1/8 miles in 1:52 1/5 over a fast but slow-playing track. He earned 100 qualifying points as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series.
