Lovely Maria (Majesticperfection) played second fiddle to stablemate I’m a Chatterbox (Munnings) all winter long, but trainer Larry Jones kept reporting that the bay lass was improving every day.
On Friday, the three-year-old miss lived up to her conditioner’s faith when taking the 141st running of the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs under jockey Kerwin Clark.
In the process, Lovely Maria not only gave her trainer a third Oaks victory, but she also gave owner Brereton Jones a third as well. The Jones boys, trainer and owner, previously teamed up to take the 2008 Oaks with Proud Spell and the 2012 edition with Believe You Can.
On Friday, Lovely Maria tracked just behind the pacesetting duo of Angela Renee (Bernardini) and Condo Commando (Tiz Wonderful) before circling those two rounding the final turn. She ran down Angela Renee, who had command in the stretch, and pulled away to finish 1 1/8 miles over the fast main track in 1:50 2/5.
Shook Up (Tapit) took second while I’m a Chatterbox and Stellar Wind (Curlin) filled out the top four.
