The 2017 Kentucky Jockey Club ran out of Churchill Downs on Saturday, November 25th and provided some early drama and a nail biter finish down the homestretch.
Diamond King got tangled up at the back end of the pack entering the first turn and threw rider Frankie Pennington from the saddle in what was an ugly fall. The incident seemed to involve Gimemaminit who was forced off position after the incident and never factored into the results. Pennington was reportedly shaken up but healthy despite the rough landing.
Unfazed up front, Promises Fulfilled carried a strong break to an early lead. The 10⁄1 shot set an early quarter-mile fraction of :23.60 and was trailed by Gotta Go at 7⁄1 and Enticed, the 3⁄1 favorite. They hit the half-mile at :47.70 and then struck the quarter pole at 1:12.53 where everyone seemed to make their move.
Promises Fulfilled continued to grind out a good line and was hounded by Tiz Mischief, but Enticed was able to find a ton of open space on the outside and devoured the homestretch. However, Tiz Mischief seemed to find another gear and chased Enticed down to the wire for a photo finish.
Eventually it was determined that Enticed had bobbed ahead by a nose at the line to win the race as a 3⁄1 preference. He was worth $8.80, $4.80 and $3.80 across the board. Tiz Mischief delivered $5.40 and $3.80 in second place at 5⁄1, while Promises Fulfilled clung on to finish third and paid out $7.80 with 10⁄1 odds of his own.
This was a definitive victory for two-year-old Enticed, who earned his first stakes victory and improved to 2-0-1 with $213,880 in career winnings. It was also an emotional victory for his Godolphin connections, who bred and trained him after producing the colt out of Medaglia d’Oro.
"This is a homebred, and that means so much to Sheikh Mohammed to be able to breed this type, raise them, and have them come through the Godolphin system," said Jimmy Bell who serves as president for Jonabell Farm. "That’s kind of a real bonus for us."
Enticed will now be one of the early leaders on the 2018 Road to the Kentucky Derby and with such an impressive team behind him he’s sure to continue generating interest. The two-year-old ran the 1 1/16th miles in a respectable time of 1:44.42.
