Claude R. McGaughey III
Claude McGaughey is affectionately known as “Shug” in horse racing circles. The Lexington native has over 1,900 wins in his professional career which include nearly 70 major stakes victories. He is a repeat winner at the Apple Blossom Handicap, Spinster Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Whitney Handicap, Travers Stakes and many more. He also owns 10 Breeders’ Cup World Championship victories and picked up his second Triple Crown victory at the 2013 Kentucky Derby thanks to Orb. Early success came to McGaughey’s stable by way of Easy Goer, who finished second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1989 before winning that season’s Belmont Stakes. In 2004, McGaughey was inducted in to the Hall of Fame. He has also been honored with an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in 1988. Other notable trainees have included Personal Ensign, Inside Information, Lure, Smuggler, Stormy Flag Flying, Point of Entry, Seeking The Gold, Awe Inspiring and Honor Code.
