Steven M. Asmussen
Asmussen is a noted jockey turned trainer, who was born in Gettysburg, South Dakota. In both 2008 and 2009, Asmussen was also honored as the Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Trainer in back-to-back years. He has won 29 significant stakes races including the Preakness Stakes with Curlin (2007) and filly Rachel Alexandra (2009) (both Horses of the Year). In total, Asmussen has more than 7,200 wins, which is most among active trainers and ranks second all time, and generated more than $239-million in earnings, which ranks fourth all time. Indeed, he is a finalist for induction into the Racing Hall of Fame. Other notable horses include Kodiak Kowboy and champion Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Untapable. With 13 starts so far in the Kentucky Derby, Asmussen has a record of 0-1-1 overall and is searching for his first victory in the race. Asmussen saddled Gun Runner in to the field at the 2016 Kentucky Derby.
