Breathoffreshheir wins Ruthless

| Brisnet Editorial | 01/28/2011 #

New Farm's homebred BREATHOFFRESHHEIR (Wildcat Heir) disposed of a couple of challengers in succession en route to an emphatic 3 3/4-length victory in Sunday's $63,700 Ruthless S. at Aqueduct.

Breaking sharply for regular rider Carlos Marquez Jr., the Ben Perkins Jr. trainee easily put away brief pace rival Nashi (E Dubai), then found Sweet Susan (Wiseman's Ferry) ranging up to her outside turning for home. Breathoffreshheir drifted a little to her right, brushing Sweet Susan at the top of the stretch, before kicking right away to complete six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 on the fast inner track.

Closing belatedly for runner-up honors was 8-5 favorite Status Pending (Tale of the Cat). Sweet Susan checked in third, and her rider Malcolm Franklin and trainer Tim Tullock Jr. claimed foul against Breathoffreshheir, but the stewards let the original order stand.

"You can see she's still learning," Marquez said of the newly-turned sophomore, who went off as 2-1 second choice. "Through the stretch she kept switching leads back and forth. Today, she just guided me around there. She was much the best."

Breathoffreshheir, who was coming off a score in the Jersey Juvenile S. for fillies bred in the Garden State, now brandishes a 4-3-1-0 mark with $134,730 in earnings.
