Ami's Holiday rallies for Grey victory
The near 3-2 favorite was last on the backstretch in the four-horse field as Big Bazinga led the way through splits of :23 2/5, :48 2/5, 1:13 2/5 and 1:38 2/5. The dark bay gelding appeared ready to spring the upset as the 9-1 longest shot on the board, but jockey Luis Contreras set Ami's Holiday down and the bay colt reeled in his rival. The Ontario-bred finished up 1 1/16 miles in 1:44 4/5 in his first foray past six furlongs for trainer Josie Carroll.
Ami's Holiday just captured his maiden debut at Woodbine on September 1, posting a 3 1/4-length victory that day, and now boasts $158,838 in earnings to go along with his perfect two-for-two mark.
"Last time he really surprised me as I wasn't sure he had the speed to win the race," Contreras said. "He was very good all around (in this one). From the three-eighths (pole) to the wire, he just likes to lay on horses."
Ami's Holiday also earned 10 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series.
Big Bazinga was 10 1/4 lengths up on 8-5 second choice Go Greeley (Horse Greeley), while Give No Quarter (Bluegrass Cat) suddenly faded on the backstretch and was eased rounding the final turf to walk off the track. Matador (Malibu Moon) was withdrawn.
