HIS EXCELLENCY broke fast but LIEUT.. GIBSON, easily the fastest in the field quickly went to the front, smothering his rivals with his speed. His margin was only three lengths over FLORIZAR who came strong after a half but Boland allowed LIEUT. GIBSON to practically gallop in the stretch. HIGHLAND LAD quit the last eighth. KENTUCKY FARMER was cut off at the half but it had no effect on the outcome. HIS EXCELLENCY tired on the end. THRIVE'S late speed gained him show money.

Early 1900's

At the turn of the century, financial problems plagued the racetrack. On October 1, 1902 a group headed by former Louisville Mayor Charles Grainger, Charlie Price and Matt J. Winn agreed to takeover the operation. The takeover was done by amending the track's articles of incorporation with no transfer in the form of a deed. Grainger was named president, Price racing secretary and Winn vice president.
