Bob Baffert
Trainer
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert won the Kentucky Derby back-to-back in 1997 and 1998 with Silver Charm and Real Quiet and again in 2002 with War Emblem. He has saddled 19 horses in the Run for the Roses. He has won the Preakness stakes a record tying five times and has won the Eclipse Award for top trainer three times. Baffert has saddled two Kentucky Oaks winners, Silverbulletday and Plum Pretty.
Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, Paul Weitman
Owner
Pegram, Watson and Weitman have been lifelong friends and have had a great deal of success in the horse business together. The first horse the three partners purchased was Midnight Lute who won back to back editions of the Breeder's Cup Sprint and was named Eclipse Champion sprinter. They followed that success with champion two and three year old Lookin at Lucky . Pegram owns a string of McDonald's restaurants in Arizona and Watson and Weitman own car dealerships in Arizona.
Pedigree
Fiftyshadesofhay captured her second stakes try in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel to put herself in the Kentucky Oaks picture, similar to when her sire, Pulpit, scored in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth to draw attention as a Kentucky Derby candidate in 1997.
Pulpit would go on to be second in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and win the Grade 2 Blue Grass prior to a nice fourth in the Kentucky Derby.
The bay suffered an injury in that classic contest and was retired to stud at his birthplace, Claiborne Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, where he would sire such top class runners as Grade 1 winners Tapit and Sky Mesa, who have gone on themselves to find fame in the breeding shed.
Fiftyshadesofhay is out of the Real Quiet mare Quiet Kim, who ran second in the 2006 Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks before eventually finishing ninth in that year’s Kentucky Oaks.
Fiftyshadesofhay’s fourth dam is the stakes-winning It’s Freezing mare Ice Fantasy, from whom is descended Grade 1 scorers Snow Ridge and Afleet Express.
