Sweet Tess is a blue-blood type of filly, being a daughter of dual classic-winning sire Afleet Alex out of the winning Alydar mare Eye Catching.
Afleet Alex just missed in the 2005 Kentucky Derby but proceeded to assert his dominance in the remaining legs of the Triple Crown, taking the Preakness by 4 ¾ lengths and the Belmont Stakes by seven lengths.
Afleet Alex has already found success in the breeding shed, siring Grade 1 winners Afleet Express and Dublin as well as the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Marathon victor Afleet Again.
Eye Catching is a half-sister to the dam of stakes winner Star City Light, but she is most noted as being a granddaughter of Marking Time.
That mare captured the 1966 edition of the Acorn and ran second in that year’s Mother Goose, but would go on in the breeding shed to foal Grade 1-winning champion and Broodmare of the Year Relaxing.
Relaxing’s progeny included classic-winning champion Easy Goer, whose rivalry with Sunday Silence dominated the 1989 racing season, as well as Grade 1 queens Easy Now and Cadillacing.
This female family is also responsible for champion Bridal Flower and Sweet Tess’ half-sister, Grade 1-placed multiple stakes victress Lady Melesi who has gone on to foal Grade 2-placed stakes winner Seruni, stakes hero Roman Emperor, Grade 2 runner-up Doc Cheney and Grade 2-placed Kentucky Oaks hopeful Liberated.
