Want to enjoy a piece of Derby all year long? Derby-Pie® is the way to do it. This scrumptious chocolate nut pie is a time-honored Kentucky tradition that shows up on our tables at Thanksgiving, under the tree at Christmas and on the buffet for out-of-town guests. Churchill Downs has been serving it for 35 years and we serve about 10,000 slices just on Derby day.
We can’t give you the recipe because it’s secret, but we can tell you that it’s been around since the Kern family made it the signature dessert of the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky 60 years ago. It’s still made by Kern's Kitchen, a 4th generation family owned business, and they still hand sort the walnuts, hand crack their own eggs and make all of the pie dough. That’s why the filling is so decadent and the crust is so flakey!
