Japan sends one of its best chances of breaking its Kentucky Derby void in the form of Forever Young.

Bred by Northern Farm, Forever Young was a 107.8 million-yen (about $780,000) yearling purchase at the Japan Select Sale in 2022. He is owned by Susumu Fujita and trained by internationally-renowned horseman Yoshito Yahagi.

Forever Young is from the second crop of Real Steel, a Dubai Turf (G1) winner who is a full brother to 2021 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) winner Loves Only You. His dam Forever Darling, by Congrats, is a daughter of Darling My Darling, who is also the second dam of another leading 2024 Derby candidate, Sierra Leone.

Forever Young has generally gotten better as distances have increased during his racing career. His sire was best at 1 1/8 miles on turf but placed up to 1 7/8 miles in Group 1 company, while his dam is by a son of noted stamina influence A.P. Indy, auguring well for his chances at 1 1/4 miles.
