Mohaymen Favored Over 'All Others', Champ Nyquist in Derby Futures 3

Mar 14, 2016 John Asher

Shadwell Stable’s Mohaymen (#13) and Reddam Racing LLC’s reigning 2-year-old champion Nyquist (#15) – unbeaten rivals headed toward a pre-Kentucky Derby East-West showdown in the $1 million Florida Derby (Grade I) on April 2 – stood as the clear individual choices to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI), but the ever-popular “All Others” (#24) remained strong when betting in the third of four pools of Churchill Downs Racetrack’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) concluded on Sunday evening.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin’s Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Mohaymen was the 7-2 favorite in the penultimate of four pools in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager – the same position the gray son of Tapit had occupied February’s second Derby Futures pool of 2016. But a flurry of late wagering on the Mutuel Field (#24), or “All Others,” pushed the odds on that betting interest down to 5-1 at the pool’s close. Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (GI) winner Nyquist, winner of Santa Anita’s San Vicente in his only start of 2016, was the second choice throughout the pool until his odds drifted up to his closing position as the 7-1 third choice.

A total of $328,108 had been wagered in KDFW Pool 3 when betting concluded at 6 p.m. (all times EDT). Overall betting in the pool included $220,331 in win betting and exacta wagering of $107,777. Total wagering through the first three pools of the 2016 Kentucky Derby Future Wager stands at $943,991. The bet’s fourth and final pool is set for April 1-3.

Wagering on KDFW Pool 3 was offered at Churchill Downs; via Twinspires.com – the official online wagering platform of the Kentucky Derby – and other online outlets; and at racetracks and satellite wagering centers throughout North America.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, launched by Churchill Downs in 1999, enables fans of the Kentucky Derby to wager on contenders for its 2016 running well in advance of the race at odds that could be much more attractive than those available on Derby Day. Each Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool permits $2 minimum win bets and $2 exacta wagers, with the latter also available in $1 minimum increments in boxes and other multiple number configurations.

No scratches or refunds of wagers are permitted in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. If it is determined during any KDFW pool that a wagering interest will not be able to participate in the Kentucky Derby, wagering on that interest will be suspended immediately.

Winning payouts from three days of betting in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is based on the odds that were in place at Sunday’s conclusion of betting.

Weekend Kentucky Derby prep races had a significant impact on final odds in the weekend’s Kentucky Derby Futures pool. The Todd Pletcher-trained Destin (#5), a 30-1 risk in Churchill Downs handicapper Mike Battaglia’s KDFW Pool 3 morning line, saw his final odds drop to 15-1 after he edged stablemate Outwork to win the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII) Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs. Later that day Danzing Candy (#4), also listed at 30-1 in the morning line, held off Mor Spirit (#14) and Exaggerator (#7) in Santa Anita’s $400,000 San Felipe (GII), after which his odds slid to a closing price of 17-1 on Sunday. Surgical Strike, who is not yet nominated to the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown, won the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park, the weekend’s remaining significant Kentucky Derby prep. Despite his loss, the Bob Baffert-trained Mor Spirit was Pool 3’s fourth betting choice at 12-1. Outlook and Surgical Strike were included in the “All Others” wager in Pool 3.

Other horses that attracted significant Pool 3 betting support included Suddenbreakingnews (#19), winner of the Southwest (GIII) at Oaklawn Park who closed at 14-1; Gotham (GIII) winner Shagaf (#17), another 14-1 Derby Futures risk; and the New Orleans-based Mo Tom (#12), the winner of the $100,000 Lecomte (GIII) and a troubled third in the Risen Star (GII) who closed at 15-1.
