Uncertainty surrounding the prospects of contenders for the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) was evident during the opening hours of betting in second pool of Churchill Downs’ 2010 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) as the mutuel field, or “all others”, was the strong fans’ choice over favored individual horses Lookin At Lucky and Eskendereya. The mutuel field, a betting interest that includes all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses in Pool 2, stood as the 2-1 favorite in the three-day pool late Friday evening. Reigning 2009 2-year-old champion Lookin At Lucky was the 7-1 second choice, while Eskendereya, winner of the Fountain of Youth (GII) and one of a record six KDFW wagering interests trained by Todd Pletcher, was a 9-1 risk. Betting on the opening session of the three-day KDFW Pool 2 totaled $64,579, which included $49,481 in win wagering and $15,098 in exacta bets. Wagering on KDFW Pool 2 opened at noon (all times EST) on Friday and is set to resume at the same time on Saturday at racetracks and satellite wagering centers, along with TwinSpires.com and other on-line wagering platforms. Pool 2 betting will conclude on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager provides fans with an opportunity to bet weeks in advance on contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) at odds that could be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. All KDFW pools also include exacta wagering. The Derby Future bet is a $2 minimum “win” wager. The minimum wager for a straight exacta, which requires the bettor to select the Kentucky Derby’s top two finishers in the exact order of finish, is also $2, while the minimum for exacta boxes and wheels is $1. There are no scratches and no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Others that attracted strong support during the first day of Pool 2 betting included the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Southwest (GIII) runner-up Dublin (11-1), Remsen (GII) winner Buddy’s Saint (16-1), and Sam F. Davis (GIII) winner Rule (24-1).
