Surprise victories in Saturday’s pair of prep races for the 136th Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) appear to have convinced many Derby fans that this year’s “Run for the Roses” is a wide-open affair as the Mutuel Field, or “all others”, is the betting favorite with one day remaining in Pool 3 of Churchill Downs’ 2010 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”).

The Mutuel Field, which includes all 3-year-olds other than then 23 individual horses in the three-day pool, ended the day as a solid 3-1 favorite following victories on Saturday by Mission Impazible ($16.20) in the $750,000 Louisiana Derby (GII) and Dean’s Kitten ($15) in Turfway Park’s $500,000 Lane’s End Stakes (GII).  Reigning 2-year-old champion Lookin At Lucky was the second choice at 5-1, while opening day favorite Eskendereya was a 6-1- risk.

A total of $120,365 – which included $44,101 in exacta betting – has been wagered heading into Sunday’s final day of wagering in Pool 3.  Kentucky Derby Future betting at racetracks, satellite wagering sites and advance deposit wagering outlets headed by will resume at noon (all times EDT), on Sunday, March 28.  Betting on KDFW Pool 3 will conclude on Sunday, March 28 at 6 p.m.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager provides fans with an opportunity to bet weeks in advance on contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) at odds that could be more attractive than those they would receive on the day of the race.  All KDFW pools include exacta wagering.  The Derby Future bet is a $2 minimum “win” wager.  The minimum wager for a straight exacta, which requires the bettor to select the Kentucky Derby’s top two finishers in the exact order of finish, is also $2, while the minimum for exacta boxes and wheels is $1.  There are no scratches and no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.  If Churchill Downs determines that injury, illness or other circumstance will prevent the participation of any individual betting interest in the Kentucky Derby, wagering on that interest will be suspended.

While Eskendereya is one of trainer Todd Pletcher’s record seven individual betting interests in KDFW Pool 3, the Pletcher-trained Mission Impazable is not in that group  Other individual horses that attracted strong Saturday support include Gotham (GIII) winner Awesome Act (13-1), Tampa Bay Derby (GIII) winner Odysseus (16-1), and the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Dublin (16-1).  The $800,000 Sunland Park Derby (GIII) is the only Derby prep set for Sunday, and Conveyance (22-1) and Tempted to Tapit (54-1) will compete in that 1 1/8-mile race.
