A pair of candidates for the $500,000-added Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) – Beautician and Tidal Pool – turned in workouts Tuesday, April 13 at Churchill Downs, where America’s premiere race for 3-year-old fillies will be run on Friday, April 30.
Beautician, the runner-up to champion She Be Wild in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Santa Anita, turned in the sharpest work of the morning as she breezed four furlongs in :47 over a fast track. The move was the fastest of 30 moves at the distance and encouraged to trainer Ken McPeek, who was disappointed by his filly’s dull effort in Keeneland’s Ashland Stakes (GI) last time out. Beautician finished last in a field of eight behind Evening Jewel in the 1 1/16-mile prep over the synthetic Polytrack course at the Lexington track.
“Beautician worked super this morning,” McPeek said. “I just don’t think she likes Polytrack. She had one good race on it and in hindsight I wish I’d run at Oaklawn (in the Fantasy) because she just didn’t seem like she ran at all on the synthetic. Her work this morning indicates that she’s good on the dirt. I need to analyze how she eats and how she’s doing going in as we get closer, but that was a good sign today”
Beautician covered the distance in fractional times of :11.40, :22.80, :34.40 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.20. She had finished second to No Such Word in the Honeybee (GIII) at Oaklawn Park in her only other start of 2010.
Westrock Stable’s Tidal Pool, runner-up to likely Kentucky Oaks favorite Blind Luck in the Fantasy (GII) at Oaklawn Park, breezed four furlongs in 48.40 for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a four-time winner of the Kentucky Oaks. The move was the ninth fastest at the distance.
