Arnold Zetcher LLC's Firing Line romped by 14 1/5 lengths on Sunday in the $800,000 Sunland Derby (G3) to earn 50 points toward a starting berth in the May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.
With Gary Stevens aboard, the bay colt skimmed the rail in front while Why Two (Bob and John) kept him company on the outside. Hitting the turn, Firing Line began asserting his class and easily opened up to gallop home in a track record time of 1:47.39 for 1 1/8 miles on the fast Sunland Park dirt.
The Kentucky-bred three-year-old moved up to sixth on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with this first stakes score. Previously, he finished second by neck to Dortmund (Big Brown) in both the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) and Robert B. Lewis S. (G2).
