BOB MILES beat the flag and jumped into a two-length lead. POWHATTAN III, AUDRAIN and ADMIRAL were in closest pursuit. BUCHANAN, fractious at the post, was away poorly, but Isaac Murphy saved ground for three-quarters of a mile, then moved him to the outside. BUCHANAN quickly responded and was in front by two lengths in the stretch. LOFTIN reduced the margin, due to the fact that Murphy eased the winner through the final eighth.
