Overview

Dornoch is aiming to achieve in 2024 what no other horse has done: emulate a Kentucky Derby-winning sibling or half-sibling.

A $325,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2022, Dornoch was bred by Grandview Equine. He is trained by Danny Gargan, whose best horse to date has been 2019 Belmont (G1) fourth-place finisher Tax.

Dornoch is from the second crop of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Good Magic, who was also second in the 2018 Kentucky Derby. His dam is Puca (by 2008 Derby winner Big Brown), which makes Dornoch a full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage.

It’s no great surprise Mage stayed the Derby trip, given his pedigree included Good Magic, Big Brown, and Summer Squall, and if Dornoch gets to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May and doesn’t win it probably won’t be because he hasn’t inherited the necessary stamina.
