Overview

Encino gives the pairing of Godolphin and Brad Cox a second potential Kentucky Derby candidate following the earlier appearance of Nash.

A Godolphin homebred, Encino has a pedigree full of U.S. Classic performance. He is by the 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, who has made a good start as a stallion, his progeny including Grade 1 winners Vequist, Slow Down Andy, Randomized, and Gretzky the Great.

Encino’s dam Glittering Jewel is by Bernardini, a Preakness winner for Godolphin’s Sheikh Mohammed who has been highly successful as a sire and broodmare sire. Glittering Jewel herself is a half-sister to 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.

Given his pedigree, Encino is not only bred to run on dirt, he’s bred to stay 1 1/4 miles. If he’s not up to Kentucky Derby class it won’t be because of a lack of aptitude in his pedigree.
