Breeder Fred Hertrich III could have two horses he bred running in the Kentucky Derby should Epic Ride sneak into the field.

Hertrich, also the breeder of Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Catalytic, bred Epic Ride from his mare Pick a Time. The John Ennis-trained colt is raced by Welch Racing LLC, which bought him for $160,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Epic Ride is by Blame, best-known for beating Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) but also the sire of more than 40 stakes winners. They include the unbeaten Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Nadal, injured before running in the 2020 Kentucky Derby. Pick a Time, by Gio Ponti, is from a family including stakes winners Cuando, Dominus, Honey Ryder, and Cuando Puede.

Blame and Gio Ponti were both able to stay at least 1 1/4 miles, so this should not be a problem for Epic Ride. Whether he has the necessary speed to be prominent at the end of the Kentucky Derby is another thing.
