Overview

Getaway Car represents the Bob Baffert barn carrying the prestigious colors of a powerhouse partnership including SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, and Stonestreet Stables.

The January-foaled dark bay colt has crafted an impressive resume during his six-start campaign earning $353,000 and compiling a consistent 2-2-0 record exclusively on fast dirt surfaces.

Getaway Cars’ tactical versatility has become a hallmark of his running style, demonstrating the ability to press the pace or stalk effectively from mid-pack. His progression through increasing distances, from a maiden victory at 5 furlongs to strong performances at 1 1/16 miles, suggests a colt still discovering his optimal running style.

Recent workouts at Santa Anita showcase his consistent form, particularly impressive is a 6-furlong move in 1:13.40 on December 7, followed by a series of sharp drills indicating continued development. His morning works consistently rank near the top of the work tab, suggesting untapped potential.

While the Kentucky Derby's 1 1/4 miles presents an unknown variable, his running style and gradual stretch-out in distances are encouraging. His recent stakes performances, including placing in graded company, demonstrate the class needed for classic aspirations like the Kentucky Derby. His Brisnet speed figures show a steady upward trajectory, with his prime power and class ratings suggesting he belongs with the elite of his generation as the Derby trail intensifies.

Race History

In a compelling renewal of the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, Journalism ($7.60) delivered a breakthrough performance under a masterful ride by Umberto Rispoli for trainer Mike McCarthy. The Kentucky-bred colt outdueled the Bob Baffert-trained duo Getaway Car and Gaming, who completed the trifecta.

The race produced a solid exacta return of $15.80 and a trifecta worth $25.70, reflecting the competitive nature of the five-horse field. Journalism's victory marked a significant milestone as he denied Baffert, who had three runners in the race including the runner-up Getaway Car and third-place finisher Gaming.

Rank, trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Antonio Fresu, finished fourth, while third Baffert entrant Mellencamp, with Kazushi Kimura aboard, completed the order of finish in fifth.

The race, contested over 1 1/16 miles on a fast track, awarded Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top finishers, with Journalism earning valuable points toward a potential start in the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

The victory was particularly noteworthy for trainer Mike McCarthy who broke through this prestigious juvenile event against multiple entries from the barn of Bob Baffert, who has historically dominated this race.
