Overview

Twenty-four years after taking the Preakness Stakes with Red Bullet, trainer Joe Orseno could find himself with another Classic contender with Hades.

Bred by a group that includes Ocala Stud, Joseph M. O’Farrell III and David O’Farrell, Hades was a $130,000 purchase at the Ocala April Sale of two-year-olds for D. J. Stable, which races him along with Robert Cotran.

Hades is from the second crop of Awesome Slew, a multiple Grade 3 winning-son of Awesome Again who was Grade 1-placed three times up to a distance of one mile. His dam The Shady Lady, an unraced daughter of Quality Road, has already produced the stakes-winning Girvin filly Devious Dame and hails from the family of Grade 1 winners Discreet Cat and Discreetly Mine.

Given that both sides of Hades’ ancestry is loaded with performance up to a mile, he will need to outstay his pedigree if he is to run 1 1/4 miles strongly in the Derby.
