Overview

Who is Kentucky Derby horse Journalism?

A testament to patient development by trainer Michael McCarthy, Journalism has blossomed into one of the division's most consistent performers. The Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners colorbearer announced his arrival with a victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) in December, earning his first 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points.

His 3-year-old campaign reached new heights with a dominant victory in the San Felipe Stakes (G2), followed by a powerful win in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), collecting 137.5 Derby points total. Under Umberto Rispoli in the Kentucky Derby, Journalism validated his West Coast form with a strong second-place finish to Sovereignty, beaten just over a length after a wide trip.

Two weeks later at Pimlico, Journalism turned the tables in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Sent off as the favorite, he delivered a professional performance under Rispoli to capture the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, defeating Gosger and Sandman on a fast track. The victory, worth $1.2 million, pushed his career earnings well past $2.5 million.

His tactical versatility and professional demeanor make him a formidable opponent in any situation, and his consistency -- having never finished worse than third -- marks him as one of the most reliable members of his generation. With the Preakness victory adding to his resume, he stands as a leading candidate for divisional honors.
