Overview

D. Wayne Lukas’ hopes of a fifth Kentucky Derby victory in 2024 could be largely in the shape of promising colt Just Steel.

Bred by Summerhill Farm, Just Steel was in demand as a yearling and fetched $500,000 at the Keeneland September sale. He is owned by BC Stables, LLC.

Just Steel is from the second crop of Triple Crown winner Justify, a crop which has already produced two Breeders’ Cup winners. He is out of the outstanding Australian Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights, whose dams include black type winners Omei Sword and Lipizzaner.

Justify has already produced a Grade 1 winner at 1 1/4 miles in the form of Belmont Oaks Invitational winner Aspen Grove, though Irish Lights’ background as a sprinter-miler casts some questions about Just Steel’s potential stamina.
