Overview

Two-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer Todd Pletcher is always a player in the lead-up to the first Saturday in May and Locked could be one of those horses that forms part of his army.

Bred by Rosa Colasanti, Locked was a $425,000 purchase from the Keeneland September yearling sale for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, third in the Derby with Danza in 2014, and Walmac Farm. By the end of his juvenile season, Locked’s earnings had already exceeded his purchase price.

Locked is a son of exciting young sire Gun Runner, third in the 2016 Derby and subsequently a winner at 1 1/4 miles in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). His dam Luna Rosa, a daughter of Malibu Moon, is a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Gabby’s Golden Gal and the Grade 2 winner Always A Princess.

Given the stamina of both Gun Runner and Malibu Moon – sire of 2013 Derby winner Orb – there seems every chance Locked will stay 1 1/4 miles well should he get to the Derby.
