Who is Lovely Grey?

Lovely Grey is a gray/roan filly born May 14, 2023. Her father is Vekoma, and her mother is Knightwithputnam. She was bred in Kentucky by Joann Adams & Katy Lee, LLC and is trained by Kelsey Danner. She's owned by Go Go Greys Stable (David Portnoy). Her only winner is jockey Axel Concepcion.

The Big Problem

Here's something very unusual: Lovely Grey has never raced on regular dirt track! All her races have been on either synthetic surfaces (the artificial track at Turfway Park) or grass/turf. The Kentucky Oaks is run on dirt at Churchill Downs. This is a MAJOR problem. She has absolutely no experience racing on the surface where the Oaks is held.

What Matters

Lovely Grey did win one race—at Colonial Downs on August 14, 2025, on a grass track at 1 1/16 miles. She finished second in two recent stakes races at Turfway Park's synthetic surface, showing she can compete against decent horses when conditions are right for her.

The Caution

The biggest issue is that Lovely Grey has NEVER raced on dirt. She's won just 1 race in 7 starts, which isn't great. She's also never raced at the full 1 1/8-mile distance that the Kentucky Oaks requires. Two more problems: she's only raced up to 1 1/16 miles at most, and all her races have been on surfaces that aren't dirt.

The Bottom Line

Lovely Grey is mismatched for the Kentucky Oaks. She's a specialist horse who only likes racing on synthetic/grass surfaces. The Oaks is on dirt, so she's not the right horse for this race.
