Last midway on the final turn, Commandment launched a furious rally to catch The Puma in the final strides and prevail by a nose in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. Seven of the last 20 Kentucky Derby (G1) winners, including 2025 winner Sovereignty, have prepped in the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby, and Saturday’s edition delivered an exhilarating stretch battle between high-caliber three-year-olds poised to make an impact at Churchill Downs.

Earlier on the program, Gary & Mary West’s homebred Prom Queen jumped from a convincing maiden win to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) picture, guaranteeing her participation with a 2 3/4-length victory in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2).

The Florida Derby and Gulfstream Park Oaks each offered points on a 100-50-25-15-10 basis to the top five respective finishers as major qualifiers in the Road to the Kentucky Derby/Oaks series.

Owned by Wathnan Racing (Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani), the Brad Cox-trained Commandment will bring a four-race win streak to the Kentucky Derby. And he figures to compete for favoritism following an outstanding win in the Florida Derby. By Into Mischief, the bay colt broke his maiden at seven furlongs the second time out at Churchill Downs last November and followed with a romping off-the-pace tally in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream in early January.

Commandment displayed enormous courage winning his last two starts, scoring by a neck in the Feb. 28 Fountain of Youth (G2) over Chief Wallabee, who was part of a thrilling three-horse stretch duel in the Florida Derby, finishing a half-length back in third. Commandment added jockey Flavien Prat for the Florida Derby and saved ground at the back of the six-horse field during the opening stages, rating about four lengths behind pacesetter Wayne’s Law.

The early pace was moderate (:24.10 and :48.80) and Prat angled Commandment wide on the final turn as the field bunched up ahead of him. The Puma struck first, offering a bold move to take a short lead in upper stretch, and Chief Wallabee and Commandment were advancing into consideration behind him.

Commandment came charging determinedly on the far outside to reach even terms in the shadow of the wire, winning a head-bobbing photo by the narrowest of margins. Off as the 9-5 second choice, Commandment stopped the teletimer in 1:49.99.

The Puma, the 7-1 fourth choice following a win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3), performed gallantly to just miss. Chief Wallabee also lost little in defeat, coming up a little short after being in position between rivals through the stretch, and the lightly raced colt figures to benefit from the experience.

Nearly, the 7-5 favorite following a win in the Holy Bull (G3), did not perform up to the same standards, weakening to be a well-beaten fourth after racing prominently. Next came Wayne’s Law and Timeless Victory.

In the Gulfstream Park Oaks, Prom Queen rated just off the early pace while wide into the first turn and launched a three-wide bid on the final turn, collaring pacesetter My Miss Mo while turning for home and drawing clear in the final sixteenth of a mile. Javier Castellano was up on the up-and-coming daughter of Quality Road for Cox.

Prom Queen left the starting gate as the 3-1 second choice among seven fillies and completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.40.

After a frontrunning second in her career debut at Gulfstream Park in late January, Prom Queen switched tactics and graduated three weeks later while stretching to two turns, winning by eight lengths from off the pace. Her tactical ability might prove to be an advantage, and Prom Queen will seek to keep improving in the Kentucky Oaks on May 1. Cox is a three-time Kentucky Oaks winner, including last year’s running with Good Cheer.

My Miss Mo, the 7-1 fourth choice following a non-threatening second in the Feb. 28 Davona Dale (G2), easily held second after establishing moderate fractions, finishing 3 3/4 lengths better than odds-on favorite and Davona Dale winner She Be Smooth, who came under a ride on the far turn and never made a serious impact from off the pace.

Betty’s Pearl came next in fourth. Nasti Z, Just Singing, and Haute Diva completed the order.
