Derby Week: What to Expect Each Day at Churchill Downs

Apr 21, 2026 TeeMara Mollett/Churchill Downs

A Guide to Kentucky Derby 152 Week

Derby Week is more than a schedule of races. It’s a full week of experiences, where each day builds on the last and brings something new to explore.

From the moment guests arrive at Churchill Downs, the atmosphere shifts. There is anticipation, energy, and a sense that something is always happening just around the corner.

Some come for the fashion. Others come for the love of horse racing. Many come for their place in history and tradition. But what makes Derby Week unforgettable is how those moments are layered with interactive activations, entertainment, and spaces designed to be experienced.

Here’s how the Kentucky Derby Week unfolds.

Opening Day: Where the Week Begins

This is the beginning of the marathon, so pace yourself.

Opening Day sets the tone with energy that is immediate and impossible to miss. The Red Bull Air Force Jumpers take to the sky in a dramatic kickoff, signaling the official start of Derby Week. It’s one of those moments that brings the entire crowd together before the day even fully begins.

From there, the experience opens up. Guests begin exploring the grounds, discovering activations, and getting a feel for the spaces they’ll return to throughout the week.

The pace is comfortable, making it the perfect time to take everything in.

Fashion reflects that same mindset. Guests arrive polished, intentional, and just beginning to experiment with bolder looks.

Sunday Funday: Immersive and Interactive

Sunday Funday shifts the experience from watching to participating.

In the White Lot at the Quint Tent, the VR Horse Racing activation powered by LG&E and KU Energy puts guests directly into the race through JockeyCam. The movement, the pace, and the crowd all come together in a way that makes the sport feel immediate and personal.

It’s immersive, unexpected, and quickly becomes a favorite for guests looking to try something new.

By this point, guests begin moving with more intention, revisiting spaces and settling into their Derby Week rhythm.

502’sDay: Louisville on Display

502’sDay is where Derby Week feels the most personal.

This is a celebration of Louisville. The city’s pride comes through loudly, with its neighborhoods, creativity, and character all highlighted on an international stage.

The energy is lighter, more expressive, and filled with moments that feel uniquely local.

At the Neighborhoods Caricature Corner outside Club SI, guests can receive custom illustrations inspired by Louisville neighborhoods. Each piece captures a different part of the city’s identity, making it both a keepsake and a conversation piece.

Fashion becomes more playful here, as guests step outside of traditional race-day looks and lean into individuality.

Winsday: Purpose and Tradition

Winsday brings a sense of purpose into the experience.

The racing lineup builds, but so does the meaning behind the day. Guests engage with the energy of the crowd while also connecting with the broader impact tied to the event.

In partnership with the Community Foundation of Louisville, local nonprofit organizations are invited to fundraise and highlight the work they do to make Louisville a more vibrant place to live, work, and play.

Activations across the venue continue to offer interactive moments, but the pace feels balanced. It’s a day to take it all in while still enjoying the excitement.

This day also features the Derby Post Draw, with a meaningful twist. Twenty nonprofits are randomly paired with post positions, and the organization tied to the winning horse receives $20,000.

It’s a great day to explore activations you may have missed earlier in the week, without the peak-day crowds.

Thurby: Rooted in Kentucky

Thurby is where Derby Week fully embraces its Kentucky identity.

Style shifts into something more relaxed, but still intentional. Denim, boots, and vintage-inspired pieces create a look that feels authentic and effortless.

Experiences reflect that same energy. The Andrew Perez Post-It Wall invites guests to leave their mark, contributing to a growing visual installation that evolves throughout the day.

Meanwhile, the infield begins to build momentum as guests gather and settle into their weekend plans.

For many locals, this is the day the weekend truly begins, as anticipation builds for the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”

Kentucky Oaks: A Sea of Pink

Kentucky Oaks is one of the most iconic visuals of Derby Week.

The venue transforms into a sea of pink, with every guest contributing to a shared moment of style and purpose. It’s coordinated, meaningful, and visually unforgettable.

This is a day built for capturing content. Guests move between activations, gathering for photos and making the most of every space.

Beauty touchpoints by L'Oréal in Matt Winn and Turf Club go beyond simple touch-ups. Guests can engage with photo walls, interactive games, giveaways, and glam cam moments, making it part of the experience rather than just a stop.

Kentucky Derby 152: The Peak of the Week

Derby Day brings everything together.

The energy is constant, the crowd is fully immersed, and every activation is in motion.

In the White Lot Paddock Plaza, the Pitching Challenge, inspired by Major League Baseball, invites guests to test their speed and accuracy, with real-time tracking and a live leaderboard that turns participation into competition.

Nearby, the Women’s National Basketball Association floral installation offers a completely different moment. Clean, elevated, and designed for capturing polished photos.

Across the grounds, fashion reaches its peak through Style Under the Spires, where guests showcase their most intentional looks of the week.

In the infield, the atmosphere becomes its own experience. White Claw creates a social lounge at the Shore Club, blending bar service with relaxed seating and high-energy surroundings.

Additional activations in Paddock Plaza and the Clubhouse Gate extend that experience across the venue. Nearby, Red Bull powers Club Red Bull with a branded DJ truck, transforming the space into a music-driven, high-energy environment that keeps momentum going throughout the day.

Derby Day is about moving between moments and creating your own experience.

More Than a Week

Derby Week is not defined by a single race or a single day.

It’s defined by the moments in between the spaces you discover, the experiences you step into, and the memories you take with you.

Each day builds into something bigger, creating an experience that feels both shared and entirely your own.

Derby Week is not just something you attend, it’s something you experience.
