Flying First Class with Derma Sotogake and Continuar

Apr 12, 2023 CDRT Staff

The Kentucky Derby is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, and every year, horses from all over the country compete for a chance to be in the starting gates on the first Saturday in May. This year, two horses from Japan have made their way to the backside of Churchill Downs. This is their journey…

Following the running of the UAE Derby at Meydan Racecourse Derma Sotogake and Continuar made their way to the United States. They may not have realized it yet, but in just 26 days they will compete against each other in the $3 million Kentucky Derby. For a short time, they were traveling companions from Dubai to Amsterdam to Chicago and then the final stop beneath the Twin Spires.

The morning of February 5th, Derma Sotogake and Continuar began their journey to the U.S. where they were loaded into padded stalls and given hay and water much like the meals we would get on an international flight. The air stalls are loaded into the cargo cabin of the 'Air Horse One!'

The flight crew on board were experienced horsemen and were responsible for monitoring the horses during the flight. Besides a few water refills and bathroom breaks, the flight was uneventful. Derma Sotogake and Continuar continued their friendship throughout the flight completely oblivious to their impending rivalry on May 6th.

Once arriving at their quarantine barn in Chicago the morning of April 6th, the two were welcomed with a fresh bed of shavings and a meal topped with extra carrots. A peaceful night's sleep was in store because their journey to Kentucky continued!

The morning of April 8th, Derma Sotogake and Continuar arrived at Churchill Downs safe and sound. The next day they got to take their first spin underneath the Twin Spires! Check out these two arriving at Churchill Downs: Derma Sotogake ArrivalContinuar Arrival. And track their training on the morning works board to stay up to date on all of their Derby preparation.
