How To Decorate For A Derby At Home Party

Apr 24, 2026 Julie Sousa

Many don’t realize you can easily create a festive, Derby-inspired setup using things you already have at home — just think: equestrian.

For instance, old belts are one of my go to’s… wrap them around glass vases or use them as napkin rings for that subtle, elevated detail. Plaid or tartan textiles also instantly bring that vibe—scarves or even blankets work well as table runners. Champagne buckets can double as trophy cups (which I love), and leftover holiday ribbons are such another easy win. Tie them to the backs of chairs, around pendant lights, or even onto drink stems for a small but thoughtful touch.

@the_avantgarde IT’S ALMOST TIME!!!! Only 11 days until the 152nd Kentucky Derby, so here are the plans for this year’s @kentuckyderby party and inspiration for yours. Make sure you guys tune in to NBC and Peacock watch on Saturday, May 2nd! #KyDerby ♬ original sound -- Julie Sousa

If you want to get a little more playful with it, wrap pool noodles in twine and turn them into horseshoe arches for a fun entrance moment. You can also repurpose old picture frames and print equestrian or vintage photos to style around your space, or even wrap books in plaid paper to layer in that classic Derby feel.

When it comes to food, I always lean toward things that feel elevated but are actually very simple. My tomato tapenade is a go-to and always a crowd favorite. I roast tomatoes in olive oil, balsamic, and lots of fresh garlic. After about an hour, it turns into this rich, spreadable tomato paste that you can serve on toasted slices of French baguette, topped with fresh feta—it’s divine.

Last year I leaned fully into southern comfort food and my guests loved it. There were zero leftovers. I served mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, fried chicken, corn, and cornbread. The key is to make it easy on yourself—host potluck style so everyone brings a dish, and don’t underestimate that air fryer on your countertop! Fried chicken, anyone?

I also believe that the fun lies in what everyone brings stylistically! The Derby is the perfect excuse to be over the top with fashion too! Between floral prints, bold colors, linen suits, big hats… nothing is too much. Great excuse for a contest for your guests to participate in.

Honestly, it’s all about making it feel thoughtful, a little whimsical, but also VERY fun.
