Jet Black Magic posts upset win in Delta Downs Princess

Nov 21, 2015 by Vance Hanson

Jet Black Magic made a sweeping move to the lead in the stretch and drew away late to post an upset win over odds-on favorite La Appassionata in Saturday’s $400,000 Delta Downs Princess (G3).

Beaten eight lengths by that rival in the local prep, the $100,000 My Trusty Cat on October 23, the juvenile daughter of Hold Me Back thrived on the muddy track to win by 4 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:42.14 for one mile.

Ridden by Roberto Morales, Jet Black Magic paid $21.40. La Appassionata, the 1-5 favorite, easily held second by 7 1/4 lengths over Above Fashion.

Owned by Carl Moore and trained by Bret Calhoun, Jet Black Magic earned 10 qualifying points toward 2016 Kentucky Oaks (G1) eligibility.

This was the second career win for Jet Black Magic, who broke her maiden on debut at Indiana Grand going six furlongs in early September. She was subsequently second in a turf allowance at Churchill Downs prior to her third in the My Trusty Cat.
