Kentucky Derby Alumni Update for Jan. 18

Jan 18, 2022 Rowan Ward

Kentucky Derby and Oaks alumni came out in force at Oaklawn and Tampa Bay Downs over the last week! Several more are in action on a huge Saturday at Fair Grounds, and a Derby alumni and Champion who has not raced in 10 months has returned to the worktab after a long absence.

Read on to get up to date!

Fifth Season Stakes

Two Kentucky Derby alumni appeared in the Fifth Season Stakes Jan. 15 at Oaklawn: Necker Island (9th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) and Long Range Toddy (16th, 2019 Kentucky Derby). Necker Island, toward the rear of a compact pack early in the one-mile race, was caught in traffic into the far turn, shifted inside past the three eighths, and chased on for fourth, four lengths behind longshot winner Rated R Superstar.  Long Range Toddy, up close on the outside early, flattened down the backstretch and finished eighth of the nine.

Hidden Stash

Hidden Stash (14th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) made his first start since the Run for the Roses at Tampa Bay Jan.15. The son of Constitution tried lawn for the first time, in a second-level allowance going one and one sixteenth miles. Breaking from the fence in a field of nine, he settled midpack inside, tipped three wide in upper stretch, and fought on under a drive. He was no match for the winner, Canadian G3 winner Shirl’s Speight, but finished a solid second, a length and three quarters back.

Attachment Rate

Attachment Rate (14th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) contested a top-shelf allowance going six furlongs on the Oaklawn dirt Jan. 14. Soon settled in last in the field of seven, he never picked up steam. He always trailed, crossing the wire seventh and last behind winner Kneedeepinsnow.

Louisiana Stakes

Mandaloun (2nd, 2021 Kentucky Derby) and Midnight Bourbon (6th, 2021 Kentucky Derby) are set to renew their rivalry in the seven-horse Louisiana S. (G3) at Fair Grounds Jan. 22, with Mandaloun in the second stall and Midnight Bourbon in the third. Major Fed (10th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) switches to the lawn in the Colonel E. R. Bradley Stakes on the same card, breaking from the fifth gate of 12.

Storm the Court

2019 Champion Two-Year-Old Storm the Court (6th, 2020 Kentucky Derby) returned to the worktab on January 17, going three furlongs over the training track at Santa Anita in 39.40. He last raced March 6 of last year, finishing fifth of nine behind Brickyard Ride in the San Carlos (G2).
