Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Dynamic One

St. Elias Stable, Phipps Stable, and Repole Stable’s Dynamic One is tied for 15th with 40 points on the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series. The chestnut was runner-up in the Wood Memorial S. (G2) in his most recent endeavor.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Dynamic One showed little in his first assignment at Aqueduct on November 14 when beaten by 16 3/4 lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight dash. The youngster was equipped with blinkers for his second try and showed marked improvement, finishing a sharp second behind multiple graded stakes victor Greatest Honour in a 1 1/16-mile test at Gulfstream Park.

He failed as the even-money choice third time out, but the son of Union Rags graduated by 5 1/4 lengths in a nine-furlong test at Aqueduct on March 7. The Wood Memorial marked his stakes debut, and the colt sports a lifetime line of 5-1-2-0, $194,120.

Dynamic One was bred in the Bluegrass State by Phipps Stable and brought the gavel down at $725,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is the first foal produced from the Smart Strike mare Beat the Drums, who is also responsible for an unraced two-year-old colt named Videri. And you won’t find many catalog pages as rich as his.

The second dam of Dynamic One is champion Storm Flag Flying, heroine of the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). 1995 Juvenile Fillies (G1) queen My Flag is her third dam, and she is out of Broodmare of the Year and Hall of Fame member Personal Ensign, who retired from racing with an unblemished 13-for-13 mark.

Dynamic One earned a 94 Brisnet Speed figure in the Wood Memorial, and he will need to take a huge step forward to challenge for the top prize in the Kentucky Derby. But he is bred for greatness and hails from a barn that has saddled two previous winners of the Run for the Roses, 

If the late bloomer thrives on the Churchill Downs surface leading up to May 1, Dynamic One could be an interesting longshot to include in your wagers.
