Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Intrepido

Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures Intrepido picked up 10 points on the 2026 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series following his three-quarters of a length score in the $300,050 American Pharoah S. (G1) at Santa Anita on Oct. 4. Piloted by Hector Berrios, the winner clocked 1 1/16 miles on the fast main surface in 1:43.67.

His pilot said after the race, “When I made my move to the outside, he responded, although not very strongly at first. But when I asked him again, he responded and produced an impressive change of pace and flew down the final stretch. He’s an amazing horse. I’m very proud of the effort he showed today.”

Desert Gate, Plutarch, Civil Liberty, and Balboa rounded out the top five and earned qualifying points on a 5-3-2-1 basis, respectively.

Trained by Jeff Mullins, Intrepido was unveiled at Del Mar on July 26 and came home fourth in a deep maiden special weight tilt at 5 1/2 furlongs. In his second appearance, the bay juvenile graduated on the Del Mar dirt by 3 1/4 widening lengths while running one mile on a fast main strip. His lifetime line now reads 3-2-0-0, $232,800.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by Sierra Fria Farm and passed through the auction ring on two occasions. He brought the gavel down at $30,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, prior to attracting a final bid of $385,000 at OBS in April. The son of Maximus Mischief is the first stakes winner produced from the Pleasantly Perfect mare Overly Indulgent.

Intrepido has shown steady improvement from a trio of runs this season while registering Brisnet Speed ratings of 79-89-99. He is expected to make his next appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Del Mar on Oct. 31.
