Three Chimneys Farm’s homebred named Ottinho rallied to be second in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland in his latest appearance to earn a berth to the 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1). The late-running three-year-old has amassed a total of 56 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series leaderboard and currently sits in 15th place.

Trained by the incomparable Chad Brown, the horse made his first race at Aqueduct on Nov. 23 and overcame a poor start to check in third on debut. He was better the second time out, moving out to 1 1/8 miles at the same venue when gamely coming out on top in a maiden special weight event on Dec. 31. The son of Quality Road kicked off his three-year-old season with a distant third in the Wither S., prior to running his best race to date in the Blue Grass.

Ottinho was bred in Kentucky and is cut out to be a great one. He is out of the high-quality Giant’s Causeway mare named Quiet Giant, who banked in excess of $400,000 and earned her biggest victory with a commanding score in the 2011 Molly Pitcher (G2) at Monmouth Park. She has been a fine broodmare as well, producing two graded stakes winners to date, led by 2017 Horse of the Year and phenomenal sire Gun Runner. Quiet Giant also counts herself a half-sister to 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam.

The Kentucky Derby contender has run his best pair of races while going around two turns, and the 1 1/4-mile distance seems well within his scope. His Brisnet Speed ratings (78-87-83-93) have not been equal to those at the top of the division, however, and he will need a major step forward to have a chance to upset the field in Louisville in his next assignment.
