Norman Stables and Saints or Sinners’ three-year-old colt named So Happy moved to the lead in early stretch and powered home through the wire to post a 2 3/4-length victory in the $501,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4. The son of Runhappy finished off nine furlongs on the fast dirt strip in a solid 1:49.01 with Mike Smith in the saddle. He also punched his ticket to the Derby while compiling 100 points in the 2026 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series contest for trainer Mark Glatt.

Potente disputed the pace from the break and was a solid second, finishing more than six lengths clear of his nearest foe while picking up 50 Derby qualifying points. Vitruvian Man earned 25 points for finishing third, while fourth-place finisher Intrepido got 15 points, and Start The Ride amassed 10 points for coming home fifth.

“He kept on going today,” Smith stated after the win. “I thought he would be better today, plus we had a better post position. Today, he really felt fit and ready to race. I can’t say enough of what a great and wonderful man Mark Glatt is. His family and the owners are wonderful people. The Kentucky Derby is America’s race. Anyone in the world would want to be in that race. There’s more there in the tank for sure. I’m looking forward to going to Kentucky again.”

So Happy began his career on Nov. 22 at Del Mar and was a winner in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint on the dirt in his lone effort as a juvenile. The colt commenced his 2026 season with a score in the San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita on Jan. 10, and he preceded his biggest win to date with a third-place result in the San Felipe (G2) on March 7. He now has a career line that reads 4-3-0-1, $480,000.

Bred in Kentucky by Leverett S. Miller, So Happy passed through the auction ring on a trio of occasions. In 2023, as a weanling, he fetched a final bid of $12,000 at Keeneland November. He was then purchased for $20,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton in Kentucky in 2024, prior to bringing the gavel down at $150,000 as a two-year-old at OBS in March of 2025. He is the first stakes star produced from the winning Blame mare named So Cunning and is from the same female family as two-time Grade 1 victor Silver Wagon.
