Life of Joy scored a resounding victory in Saturday’s $392,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), rolling past hitherto unbeaten favorite Bella Ballerina to win by 3 3/4 lengths in stakes-record time.

The Brad Cox filly banked 100 points toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1), propelling herself to the top of the leaderboard with a total of 122 points. She was also kicking off a big-race double for jockey Flavien Prat, who won the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) aboard Emerging Market.

Life of Joy was winning for the first time since last October’s Rags to Riches S. on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. But the daughter of Hall of Famer Gun Runner had run well in defeat in both interim starts. A late-running fourth to Bella Ballerina in the Golden Rod (G2), Life of Joy returned to place second to early Oaks favorite Zany in the Suncoast S. at Tampa Bay Downs.

“I thought last time she got beat by a good filly (Zany),” Prat said. “I didn't think the set-up of the race (at Tampa) was to her favor. But today she had a lot of pace to run at, and she ran a great race.”

Bella Ballerina, who embroiled herself in that pace, ended up handing Life of Joy her ideal scenario at Fair Grounds. The even-money favorite was too aggressive early, pulling on the outside to press longshot Maximum Offer through fractions of :23.24 and :46.83. Although Bella Ballerina took over by the six-furlong mark in 1:11.10, she had expended a lot of energy.

In contrast, Life of Joy was relaxing further back until Prat asked her to improve position. Advancing on the far turn, she swung for home full of momentum and soon surged clear.

Life of Joy clocked 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.27, eclipsing the stakes record of 1:42.38 set by Blushing K. D. in 1997. Blushing K. D. went on to win the Kentucky Oaks.

The fifth Fair Grounds Oaks winner for Cox, Life of Joy will try to emulate Good Cheer, who turned the Fair Grounds/Kentucky Oaks double last year.

Bella Ballerina held second, good for 50 points that increased her total to 110. Luv Your Neighbor ran evenly in third (25 points for a total of 65). Newtown Pike, who pinged her gate open prior to the start, was along for fourth (15 points for a total of 25). Maximum Offer faded to fifth (10 points for a total of 14), followed by Love and Trust and Miss Metoyer.

Campaigned by Will Stroud, Andrew Farm, Mountmellick Farm, and For the People Racing Stable, Life of Joy paid $9.40 as the 3.70-1 second choice. Her resume now reads 5-3-1-0, $420,620.

Life of Joy was bred by Springhouse Farm in Kentucky and sold for $375,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. The bay is the first foal from Jordan’s Leo, a stakes-placed mare by Malibu Moon. She descends from Grade 1 heroine Jeanne Jones, runner-up in the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and 1988 Kentucky Oaks. Jeanne Jones is also the ancestress of Grade 2 winner Belle of Perintown, who was third in the 2003 Fair Grounds Oaks.
