Monomoy Girl wins Kentucky Oaks 144

Monomoy Girl captured the 2018 Kentucky Oaks (G1) on Friday at Churchill Downs with jockey Florent Geroux aboard.

Trained by Brad Cox, the chestnut daughter of Tapizar ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.13 over the fast main track as the 5-2 second choice and survived an objection from the runner-up’s jockey to earn the score.

Monomoy Girl tracked the early pace set by Take Charge Paula, took over from that one rounding the final turn and hooked up with Wonder Gadot in the lane. Wonder Gadot refused to back down and the duo battled it out to the wire, with Monomoy Girl inching away late to remain perfect on the year in three starts.

Wonder Gadot was best-of-the-rest while 2-1 favorite Midnight Bisou followed in third. Eskimo Kisses and Chocolate Martini followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.
