Speed vs. Stamina for a Kentucky Derby winner

A balance of speed and stamina in pedigrees (bloodlines) is an important component for a Kentucky Derby (G1) winner. Horses with too much speed will find the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby distance beyond their scope. Horses with too much stamina tend to be plodding types, lacking tactical ability and the turn of foot to win the Kentucky Derby.

Classic races like the Kentucky Derby present new challenges to runners. Horses must be able to navigate an extended 1 1/4-mile distance for the first time. They’ve never faced an atmosphere like Churchill Downs on Derby Day or squared off against such a large field size of up to 20 horses.

Breeders aim to balance speed and stamina in pedigrees when it comes to producing horses who can win classic races like the Kentucky Derby.

Let’s review the role speed and stamina play for the Kentucky Derby.

Speed for the Kentucky Derby

Speed enables frontrunning horses to gain position from the starting gate, reach top speed quickly, and utilize their early ability to race on or close to the lead during opening stages. Horses geared towards too much speed tend to prefer shorter distances than the Kentucky Derby.

At longer distances, frontrunning horses must ration their speed to excel, establishing a cruising rhythm while being forwardly positioned, enabling them to save something for the latter stages.

Fast horses who conserve their early speed, settling off the pace towards midpack or the back of the field, need a burst of speed to win major races. Late runners must be able to make up ground quickly, and horses geared towards too much stamina tend to lack the closing kick necessary for the Kentucky Derby.

Stamina for the Kentucky Derby

Horses with stamina are equipped to deliver a high level of performance over a route of ground. Horses with either too much speed in their pedigrees or that are simply geared towards too much speed won’t be able to carry their form over the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby distance, tiring out too early.

Horses bred for longer distances tend to produce similar offspring, but there is no exact science. But handicappers will take stock of pedigrees when analyzing Kentucky Derby contenders because there will be some Kentucky Derby contestants who struggle with the 1 1/4-mile distance due to a lack of stamina.

American Pharoah Pedigree

American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years when sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness (G1), and Belmont (G1) in 2015, and his pedigree serves as a prime example when it comes to the mix of speed and stamina desired for the Kentucky Derby.

The top side of his pedigree (father's side) stood out as a perfect source of stamina. American Pharoah is by 2009 Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile, a son of 2003 Belmont winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Empire Maker, a son of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled. The 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby distance looked well within the scope of American Pharoah when analyzing the top half of his pedigree.

The bottom half (mother/dam side) was more geared towards speed. His dam, Littleprincessemma, raced twice in sprints, and American Pharoah’s siblings preferred shorter distances. There were some stamina influences in the extended female family, but the bottom half of American Pharoah’s pedigree suggested more sprint or middle distances.

It turned out to be the perfect balance of speed and stamina for American Pharoah, who went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after his Triple Crown glory.

Conclusion

Pedigrees play an important role in the Kentucky Derby, and there’s always plenty of analysis surrounding it.

Horses bred with too much speed tend to prefer shorter distances. Stamina is necessary to thrive over longer distances. Ideally, horses with the balance of speed and stamina in their pedigrees will be able to perform their best over the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Kentucky Derby.

Finding the perfect mix is the challenge.
