Campaigned by a partnership including NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw, Taken by the Wind advanced on the Kentucky Oaks (G1) trail with a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday’s $145,500 Silverbulletday S. at Fair Grounds.

Taken by the Wind remained undefeated while adding 20 points to her Oaks account. The Kenny McPeek trainee now has 30, putting her third on the leaderboard. She earned her first 10 points by dominating the Pocahontas (G3), the Road to the Oaks kickoff race, at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13.

Unraced since the Pocahontas, around a one-turn mile, Taken by the Wind was stretching out to two turns here. But the bay showed no signs of rustiness after her four-month vacation.

Although Taken by the Wind had not led in her previous races, jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. changed tactics in the Silverbulletday because no one else wanted to go forward. Taken by the Wind took full advantage of a glacial early pace in fractions of :25.69, :50.24, and 1:14.49.

Luv Your Neighbor tracked in second, with 1-2 favorite Atropa stalking in a ground-saving third. Both challenged Taken by the Wind down the stretch, trying to intercept her. They got close, but could not pass the front runner who had been given too easy a time early.

Taken by the Wind stayed on resolutely to fend off Luv Your Neighbor on the outside and Atropa on the inside. Finishing the mile and 70 yards in 1:43.58, Taken by the Wind returned $10.80.

Luv Your Neighbor missed by a neck, her second straight runner-up effort. Edged last time out in the Untapable S. at this track and trip, Luv Your Neighbor picked up 10 points (for a total of 15).

Atropa was another neck away in third, good for six points to increase her tally to 11. She was previously a close second in the Golden Rod (G2) at Churchill.

Pashmina, fourth at every call, picked up four points (for a total of seven). Fifth-placer Dancin in Old Town (two points) and the trailing White Smoke had little chance of trying to rally from off the slow pace.

Taken by the Wind extended her record to 3-for-3, earning $270,710. A $20,000 yearling purchase at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October, she is co-owned by Magdalena Racing (operated by the trainer’s wife, Sherri McPeek), Bradshaw, Graham Leveston, and Raasi Stable.

From the first crop of 2021, Santa Anita Derby (G1) hero Rock Your World, Taken by the Wind was bred by Courtney L. Meagher in Florida. She is out of the First Samurai mare Up for Grabs, from the further family of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Society Selection.
