When is the Kentucky Derby and what time will it take place?

May 02, 2016 Jennifer Caldwell/Brisnet.com

The Kentucky Derby is scheduled for the first Saturday in May, which in 2016 falls on May 7.

It’s been run on the first Saturday in May since 1932, when it was permanently scheduled for that date instead of an undetermined date in mid-May. (In 1945, however, it had to be postponed to June 9 due to wartime restrictions.)

The first Kentucky Derby took place on May 17, 1875, and a crowd of 10,000 fans watched as Aristides kicked off “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” by beating 14 rivals while going 1 1/2 miles. The distance was shortened to 1 1/4 miles in 1896.

The Derby post time has varied over the years. For this year’s 142nd edition, the approximate post time is 6:34 p.m. (EDT).
