Who is Potente?

Potente arrives at Churchill with Into Mischief's legendary Derby record behind him and Bob Baffert's unmatched experience in front of him. Both are real assets. The problem is what happened at Santa Anita: Potente took a contested pace through fast fractions in the Santa Anita Derby, then found nothing in the stretch and weakened to second. That's a concerning pattern for a 1¼-mile race where the pace will be even hotter. The California competition also tends to be lighter than what he'll face at Churchill. He's a credible contender with elite connections, but the stretch performance is an honest red flag that handicappers shouldn't rationalize away.

What Makes Potente Special

Potente has won two of his races three races, earning $262,000. His first victory came on Jan. 31, 2026, at Santa Anita Park in a maiden race at six furlongs on fast dirt, winning by 3/4 length at 3-5 odds with jockey Kazushi Kimura.

Most impressively, Potente won second race on March 7, 2026, at Santa Anita Park in a stakes race at 1-1/16 miles on fast dirt, winning by a head at 8-1 odds with jockey Juan J. Hernandez. Most recently, he finished second to So Happy in the prestigious Southern California Derby prep, the Santa Anita Derby (G1).
