Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has a potential second string to Just Steel for the 2024 Kentucky Derby in the form of Seize the Grey.

Bred by Jamm Ltd, Seize the Grey is owned by MyRacehorse, which bought him from the Fasig-Tipton August yearling sale at Saratoga for $300,000.

Seize the Grey is by Arrogate, whose victories included three top 1 1/4-mile races: the Travers (G1), Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and Dubai World Cup (G1). At stud he died prematurely but not before leaving top horses such as Belmont (G1) winner Arcangelo and Kentucky Oaks (G1) heroine Secret Oath. Seize the Grey’s dam Smart Shopping, by Smart Strike, is from the family of Grade 1 winners Power Broker and Miss Shop.

Given the presence of Arrogate and Smart Strike in his pedigree, Seize the Grey should stay 1 1/4 miles should he find his way to the start of the Kentucky Derby.
