Meet Wonder Dean: The International Racing Champion

Wonder Dean has done more to prepare himself for the unique demands of the Kentucky Derby than any other international shipper. He's raced in three countries, adapted to multiple jockeys and track configurations, and won the UAE Derby by stretching out in distance, evidence that stamina is his calling card. Trainer Takayanagi made this journey before with T.O. Password, finishing fifth in 2024, and jockey Sakai guided the legendary Forever Young. The concern is structural: Deep Impact and Dee Majesty represent a primarily turf-based Japanese sire line, and the UAE Derby-to-Kentucky Derby pipeline has produced exactly zero Derby superfecta finishers in 20 attempts, with Forever Young the only partial exception. His dirt ability comes largely from the dam side through Charismatic and Pleasant Colony, but those connections are several generations back. He's arguably better-suited than that record suggests, but the 0-for-20 statistic is a hard number to ignore when allocating your wagering budget.

His Family Tree

Wonder Dean's father is Dee Majesty, a stallion from Japan who earned $2.8 million and won stakes races in Japan. Deep Impact is Wonder Dean's grandsire (his father's father) and is one of Japan's greatest racehorses. His mother, Wonder Siang Praw, earned $417,000 from 22 races and won in both dirt and muddy conditions. She was particularly tough on mud, winning multiple times on sloppy dirt. This gives Wonder Dean international bloodlines built for multiple surfaces and conditions.

His Racing Record

Wonder Dean has raced six times with two wins:

  • Sept. 14, 2025, at Nakayama, Japan (Maiden race, 1 1/8 miles, dirt): WON by eight lengths at 9-2 odds
  • March 28, 2026, at Dubai-Meydan, UAE (Stakes race, 1 3/16 miles, fast dirt): WON by 2.5 lengths, earning major money

He's also raced in Saudi Arabia (February 2026) and competed on turf and various dirt surfaces. He earned most of his money ($655,000) in 2026 from just two races.

What Matters: Why to Root for Wonder Dean

Wonder Dean has traveled the world and succeeded in international competition. His recent wins show he is in excellent current form. He can compete on different surfaces and has proven stakes capability at classic distances (1 1/8 to 1 3/16 miles). His most recent win was huge, and he's improving.

Caution: Potential Vulnerabilities

Wonder Dean has never raced in the United States—we don't know how he'll adapt to American racing. Only two wins from six total races show inconsistency. He hasn't raced at the exact Kentucky Derby distance of 1 1/4 miles. American-based competition may differ from international racing.
