Owner Tami Bobo could get a chance to improve on her fourth with Simplification in the 2022 Kentucky Derby with Catalytic in 2024.

Bobo, along with Julie Davies and George Isaacs, races Catalytic from the barn of Saffie Joseph. A $125,000 purchase from the Fasig-Tipton August yearling sale, Catalytic was bred by Fred Hertrich III.

Catalytic is from the first crop of Catalina Cruiser, a multiple Grade 2 winner between 6 1/2 and 8 1/2 furlongs. He is out of the Distorted Humor mare One Show Only, whose granddam She’s a Winner is a sister to three graded stakes winners and the dam of four more, including Grade 1 winner Bluegrass Cat.

Catalina Cruiser’s racetrack history doesn’t suggest he would sire a 1 1/4-mile horse but he is by Belmont (G1) winner Union Rags. One Show Only’s sire Distorted Humor is also a stamina influence, so Catalytic isn’t without a chance of staying 1 1/4 miles.
