Overview

Repole Stable has had its share of bad luck with the Kentucky Derby, most notably with the late withdrawals of fancied contenders Uncle Mo (2011) and Forte (2023).

However, principal Mike Repole is nothing but persistent and is back on the Derby trail in 2024 with champion 2023 juvenile Fierceness.

A Repole Stable homebred, Fierceness is from the second crop of City of Light, whose four Grade 1 victories included the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and the Pegasus World Cup. His dam Nonna Bella, by Stay Thirsty, is a half-sister to Wood Memorial (G1) winner Outwork, 14th in the 2016 Kentucky Derby and now a producer of multiple Grade 1 winners at stud.

City of Light has made a promising start as a sire but the progeny of both he and Stay Thirsty have average winning distances below seven furlongs and it remains to be seen how effective Fierceness will be at 1 1/4 miles.
