John Gunther, the man who bred Triple Crown winner Justify, has seen another horse on the Classic trail again this season in the form of Grand Mo the First.

Trained by Victor Barboza Jr., Grand Mo The First is raced by Granpollo Stables. The colt has gone to public auction three times but sold just once, for $135,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale.

Grand Mo the First is by the highly-successful stallion Uncle Mo, sire of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist and Belmont (G1) winner Mo Donegal. His dam Lilies So Fair, a winning daughter of Giant’s Causeway, is a half-sister to Florida Derby (G1) winner Materiality.

Though Lilies So Fair carries some speed in her pedigree, the influence of Giant’s Causeway and Uncle Mo should be enough for Grand Mo the First to have the stamina necessary to stay 1 1/4 miles.
