A pair of major qualifiers, the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park and $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park, featured high-rated Kentucky Derby (G1) contenders over the weekend. Each race offered points on a 100-50-25-15-10 basis to the top five respective finishers toward a berth in a projected 20-horse Kentucky Derby field.

The final three major Kentucky Derby qualifiers will be offered this Saturday, April 4.

What Happened

The Florida Derby featured a thrilling three-horse battle.

Commandment saved ground while racing last of six into the first turn and bided his time behind a tight pack of rivals along the backstretch. New jockey Flavien Prat began to urge Commandment midway on the final turn and went to a full-out drive while angling five-wide into the stretch run. The Puma moved sooner, striking the front in upper stretch and driving clear by about a length, but Commandment was advancing rapidly on the far outside. Chief Wallabee was also in the mix, splitting The Puma and Commandment to put himself in position to challenge in the final furlong,

Commandment dug deep to get up by a nose in the last stride and Chief Wallabee wound up a half-length back in third.

Renegade avoided any suspense in the Arkansas Derby, launching a dynamic rally from off the pace on the final turn and powering to a clear lead in the stretch, drifting wide while rolling home to a four-length decision.

Analysis

The top three finishers from the Florida Derby merit serious consideration for the Kentucky Derby.

Owned by Wathnan Racing (Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani), Commandment has won four consecutive starts for trainer Brad Cox, who captured the 2021 Kentucky Derby with Mandaloun via disqualification. Commandment broke his maiden at Churchill Downs last fall and recorded a neck win in the Fountain of Youth (G2) in his previous outing, gallantly denying Chief Wallabee after altering course and driving through a seam along the inside.

His last two races have come back fast, netting a 100 Brisnet Speed rating in the Florida Derby and 103 figure in the Fountain of Youth, and Commandment earned a 121 Late Pace rating Saturday, his second consecutive triple-digit number.

By Into Mischief, Commandment can shift course without losing momentum and owns the tactical ability to be placed up close if the pace is moderate. He looks poised to run well in the Kentucky Derby.

Following a convincing Tampa Bay Derby (G3) win that didn’t come back fast (93 Speed), The Puma progressed with a top-class performance in the Florida Derby, receiving a 100 Speed rating. Trainer Gustavo Delgado knows how to get horse to peak on the first Saturday in May, winning the 2023 Kentucky Derby with Mage at 15-1 odds. Chief Wallabee also lost little in defeat; the lightly raced colt has run big races in both stakes appearances and is a candidate to show more for two-time Kentucky Derby winner Bill Mott.

Renegade may be favored in the Kentucky Derby following an impressive win in the Arkansas Derby. Disqualified and placed second when making his second start versus maiden rivals at Aqueduct last October, the late runner concluded 2025 with a non-threatening second in the Remsen (G2).

He’s improved as a three-year-old for two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, recording his first official win in the seasonal opener, February’s Sam F. Davis at Tampa, and Renegade notched career-best Brisnet Speed (97) and Late Pace (111) for the 3 3/4-length romp. Owned by Mike Repole and Robert and Lawana Low, Renegade looked more dominant while pairing up Speed ratings from the Davis in the Arkansas Derby, registering a 109 Late Pace figure.

The bay colt is by Into Mischief, who has sired a record-tying three Kentucky Derby winners, including 2025 winner Sovereignty, and Renegade appears built for the added 1 1/4-mile distance. And while the talented sophomore will need to work out a trip from off the pace and probably wants to avoid drifting out like in the Arkansas Derby, Renegade has plenty going for him.
